Mizoram: ECI Directs Removal of General Administrative Department Secretary
Northeast Desk, 18th March: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued directives for the dismissal of the Secretary of the General Administrative Department in Mizoram. The decision by the ECI arrives amid undisclosed grounds prompting the immediate departure of the incumbent Secretary, whose identity remains undisclosed.
In a broader move, the Election Commission has orchestrated the removal of Home Secretaries across six states, namely Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Additionally, Secretaries of the General Administrative Department in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh have been relieved of their duties. Furthermore, the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal has been subjected to removal proceedings.
Notably, the Election Commission has taken proactive measures to oust officials beyond the administrative spectrum, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, alongside Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners.
Mizoram is poised to conduct its electoral process on April 19, 2024, in the initial phase. The electoral landscape comprises a total of 8,61,277 voters, comprising 4,14,777 males, 4,41,520 females, and 4,980 service electors. Among the districts, Aizawl district commands the highest electorate count with 2,88,268 voters, while Hnahthial district boasts the lowest with 16,257 voters.
Enumerating further, the Assembly Constituency with the largest voter base is 36-Tuichawng of Lawngtlai District, comprising 36,493 voters, juxtaposed with 34-Thorang of Lunglei District, harboring the fewest electors at 15,152. The gender ratio for 2024 stands at 1,064, with Mamit district representing the sole precinct where male electors surpass their female counterparts. Additionally, 4,758 senior voters aged above 85 years will be afforded the opportunity to vote from their residences.
