Northeast Desk, 4th December: The Mizoram state, engaged in a three-way contest among the incumbent MNF, ZPM, and Congress, is presently in the midst of vote counting.
Initially scheduled for Sunday alongside Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, the Election Commission rescheduled the count following appeals from political parties, NGOs, churches, and student bodies. This decision considers the cultural significance of Sunday to Mizoram’s predominantly Christian population. The polls, conducted on November 7, saw an impressive participation rate, with over 80 per cent of the state’s 8.57 lakh electorate exercising their voting rights. A total of 174 candidates, including 18 women, contested in this vibrant democratic process.
The key players, MNF, ZPM, and Congress, contested for 40 seats each, with the BJP presenting candidates for 13 seats. The AAP, making its debut in the assembly polls, contested in four seats, and 17 Independent candidates added to the electoral diversity.
