Mizoram Elections 2023: Mizo Zirlai Pawl issues warning against giving tickets to married women to non-tribals
Northeast Desk, 13th October: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex student body of Mizoram, has issued a stern warning to all political parties in the state, cautioning them against granting election tickets to women who are married to non-tribals. This decision was made following an executive meeting held at the MZP’s general headquarters.
The MZP’s stance is a firm opposition to allowing candidacy for women married outside the tribal community, as they argue that certain communities have faced the risk of becoming minorities due to more developed communities in their own lands. They are determined to prevent such a scenario in Mizoram and maintain the tribal identity. The MZP’s warning is also grounded in the concern that it could lead to polarization within Mizo society.
The MZP has made it clear that they will take strong action against any political party that defies this warning. This directive comes as the Election Commission of India (ECI) recently announced the polling date for the 40-member Mizoram assembly on November 7, with the counting scheduled for December 3, along with results from four other states.
Notably, political parties like the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) have already announced their candidate lists, and so far, none of the women candidates announced are married to non-tribals.
