Mizoram: Escaped Bear from Aizawl Zoo Spotted Alive Near Premises

Northeast Desk, 22nd June: Aizawl Zoological Park officials have confirmed that the bear which broke free from its enclosure on April 1st is alive and has been sighted in the vicinity of the zoo premises. Following its escape, a comprehensive search was launched by zoo authorities, who deployed trap cages and trackers in attempts to tranquilize the bear, all of which were unsuccessful.

Recent efforts involved tracking the bear using a thermal drone equipped with night vision, resulting in the capture of its image. The zoo staff is confident the bear is currently located just outside the zoo compound. On the night of June 21st, it was observed feeding on ripe jackfruits within the zoo grounds, where scratch marks on trees were also discovered.

The incident on April 1st occurred due to a severe windstorm that uprooted a tree, creating an opening through which the bear escaped its enclosure, according to Aizawl Zoological Park Director PC Laltanpuia.
