Mizoram Government Establishes State Human Rights Commission
Aizawl: In a significant development, the Mizoram government has officially established a State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in compliance with a directive issued by the Gauhati High Court’s Aizawl bench.
The announcement came during a recent court hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Zofa Welfare Organisation (ZWO). The state government informed the court about the creation of 16 posts for the SHRC, including the positions of chairperson and members.
The court acknowledged the government’s efforts but emphasized the need for swift appointments to key positions and the establishment of a functional commission. The court adjourned the case for eight weeks, allowing the government sufficient time to complete the necessary formalities.
The establishment of the SHRC is a crucial step towards ensuring the protection of human rights in Mizoram. It is expected to play a vital role in addressing human rights violations and promoting accountability within the state.
