Mizoram: Huge cache of contraband areca nuts recovered worth over Rs 10 lakhs in Champhai

Guwahati: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, a huge consignment of contraband areca nuts was seized the Assam Rifles in the General Area Hmunhmeltha in the Champhai district of Mizoram on Saturday.

This was informed by the Assam Rifles in a statement.

Acting on a tip off, the operations were carried out jointly with the 8 Assam Rifles, 2 Assam Ridles and a representative of the Customs Department.

A total of 2,250 kilograms of areca nuts worth approximately Rs 10 lakhs was seized in the operation.

It needs to be mentioned that a legal proceeding has been initiated by the customs department.

Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles statement read, “Ongoing smuggling of areca nut is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border.”

“Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram,” it added.
