Mizoram: Landslide Claims Lives of Family of Three in Aizawl
Northeast Desk, 2nd July: A devastating landslide struck Aizawl’s Zemabawk locality on July 2nd, claiming the lives of a family of three, including a four-year-old child. The victims have been identified as Isak Chhangte (32), his wife Lalrinthari (25), and their young daughter Abigail Lalchhanhimi.
Reports from local authorities indicate that their home was completely destroyed and buried under debris due to the landslide, which occurred amidst incessant rains over the past 48 hours.
Following the tragic incident, the coffins of the deceased have been moved to the church hall of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Zemabawk. Traditional mourning rituals are expected to be observed throughout the night, leading up to the funeral service scheduled for July 3rd, 2024.
Earlier, Mizoram experienced a series of landslides that caused widespread damage across the state. Another tragic incident saw three houses demolished by a landslide in Aizawl’s Zuangtui locality earlier the same morning.
As a precautionary measure, the Local Council of Aizawl’s Salem Veng swiftly evacuated 20 families from their residences to safer locations. Additional reports indicate that several other landslides have resulted in property damage in various parts of Mizoram, further highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing rainfall.
