Mizoram Landslides and Rainfall: Schools Closed Amid Safety Concerns
Northeast Desk, 20th August: Continuous rainfall over the past 72 hours has triggered several landslides across Aizawl, leading to road blockages and the destruction of homes and workshops. The relentless downpour has caused significant disruption in the region, with local authorities taking precautionary measures to safeguard residents.
In response to the severe weather conditions, the district administrations of Aizawl and Kolasib have announced the closure of all schools on Tuesday, August 20. This decision was made to protect students from potential hazards posed by the ongoing rainfall and landslides.
Since Monday, Aizawl and the surrounding areas have been battered by continuous rain, resulting in multiple minor landslides. The closure of schools is a proactive step to ensure the safety of children during these adverse conditions.
Despite the challenging situation, authorities from Mizoram’s disaster management and rehabilitation department have reported no casualties related to the heavy rainfall so far. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing as the state grapples with the effects of the persistent downpour.
