Mizoram Launches Initiative to Boost Agricultural Sector with Livestock and Handholding Scheme
Aizawl – Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday introduced a new initiative that combines the National Livestock Mission with a state Handholding Scheme, aimed at reviving the agricultural sector impacted by COVID-19 and African Swine Fever.
The announcement, made at Aijal Club’s McCabe Hall, highlighted the sector’s drop in output from 45% to 23% due to the pandemic.
The programme, entering its pilot phase, provides farmers with loans under government guarantees and interest subsidies. With 50% funding from the Central Government and 10% from partners, the remaining costs are covered through accessible loans.
“We have received many applications for handholding partners. This year is a trial phase, but it will expand next year,” Lalduhoma stated, adding that applications can now be submitted at district offices.
In addition to promoting meat processing, the initiative aims to reduce the state’s contribution to the Animal Insurance Scheme from 30% to 10%, with Mizoram already leading the Northeast in National Livestock Mission implementation. The scheme supports pig, goat, poultry, and livestock production, with over 76 farmers receiving loans and 31 securing subsidies.
The programme is expected to create new opportunities for young entrepreneurs in meat processing, with district offices now accepting applications to enhance accessibility for rural residents.
