Mizoram: Leaders Unite to Seek Change in Poll Counting Date
Northeast Desk, 9th November: Leaders from Mizoram’s churches, political parties, and prominent NGOs came together on November 9, urging a modification in the date of poll counting for the upcoming elections. The Mizoram Church Leaders Committee, along with representatives from various sectors, expressed their concerns to Chief Electoral Officer Madhup Vyas about the original counting date coinciding with a sacred Christian day.
Given Mizoram’s predominantly Christian population, where Sunday holds significance for worship and rest, the leaders proposed rescheduling the poll counting to December 4 or 5, 2023. This adjustment aims to respect religious practices and honor the sentiments of the Christian community.
CEO Madhup Vyas assured the gathering that he would convey their concerns to higher authorities promptly, recognizing the importance of addressing the issue with sensitivity. The Mizoram Church Leaders Committee acknowledged their limitations in influencing this matter and hinted at potential involvement from NGOs and political parties if further action is required.
