Mizoram: Lunglei District Anti-Tobacco Squad Cracks Down on Tobacco Violations

Aizawl: The Lunglei District Anti-Tobacco Squad (ATS) conducted a surprise inspection at Sobji Bazar and surrounding areas on Friday, seizing over 100 grams of cigarettes and other tobacco products. This operation aimed to enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, which prohibits smoking in public places.

Eleven individuals were apprehended for violating Section 4 of COTPA, which specifically bans smoking in areas like auditoriums, hospitals, railway stations, and government offices. These public spaces are designated as smoke-free zones to protect citizens from the dangers of second-hand smoke.

The Lunglei ATS imposed a cumulative fine of ₹1,050 on the offenders, with penalties reaching up to ₹200 per violation as mandated by Section 21(1) of the Act. This strict enforcement demonstrates the government’s commitment to public health and adherence to anti-tobacco regulations.

According to a representative from Lunglei ATS, “Protecting public spaces from the dangers of second-hand smoke is our top priority.” The squad plans to continue conducting regular inspections to promote a healthier environment and prevent tobacco-related hazards.

This crackdown is part of a broader effort to curb tobacco use in India, where the government has implemented various measures to regulate tobacco sales and advertising. By enforcing COTPA, the Lunglei ATS is contributing to a nationwide push for a smoke-free India.
