Mizoram: Melthum Quarry Collapse Kills 14 Amid Cyclone Remal’s Havoc

Northeast Desk, 28th May: In a devastating incident, 14 individuals lost their lives and one child was rescued after a stone quarry collapsed in Aizawl’s Melthum and Hlimen border area on May 28 around 6 am. The collapse, attributed to the severe impact of Cyclone Remal, occurred as heavy rains and gusty winds battered Mizoram.

The child was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Rescue operations are ongoing, with fears that many more workers, reportedly all non-tribals, remain trapped under the rubble. Of the deceased, six have been identified as Mizos, three as non-Mizos, while the identities of the others are yet to be confirmed. The collapse also caused significant damage to several nearby houses.

Meanwhile, the cyclone’s fury led to a massive landslide, blocking access to Lengpui Airport, further complicating rescue and relief efforts. Over 20 graveyards were affected as several community cemeteries collapsed due to the landslide.

The intensity of Cyclone Remal has also caused the Tlawng River to swell and flood the Sairang locality, impacting numerous homes. In Tlangnuam locality, the heavy water flow resulted in livestock, including pigs, being swept away.

Cyclone Remal made landfall along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on the night of May 26, bringing with it torrential rains and powerful winds before moving towards northeastern India, causing widespread destruction across the region.

This is a developing story, and further details are awaited as rescue operations continue and authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
