Mizoram Minister Requests Urgent Aid Following Cyclone Remal’s Devastation

Northeast Desk, 2nd June: Mizoram Minister Dr. K. Beichhua has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deep concern over the severe destruction caused by heavy rains and landslides in the state. The adverse weather, intensified by Cyclone Remal, has led to the tragic loss of at least 34 lives due to a collapsed stone quarry and multiple landslides in Aizawl District. Several individuals remain missing as the state grapples with the aftermath.

In his letter, Dr. Beichhua highlighted the extensive damage caused by the incessant rainfall, which has severely impacted roads, bridges, water supply, power supply, private residences, and agricultural land across Mizoram. He has requested Rs. 1,000 crore in special assistance from the central government to facilitate relief efforts and reconstruction initiatives. Emphasizing the urgent need for intervention, he called for support to aid the people of Mizoram during this critical time.

Responding to the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Remal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex-gratia payments from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the victims across Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal. On the microblogging site X, PM Modi stated, “An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased due to the natural disasters in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each.”

Additionally, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on May 28 an ex-gratia of Rs. 15 crore for the victims affected by the devastating landslide. The families of those who lost their lives will receive Rs. 4 lakh each.

The combined efforts of state and central governments aim to provide much-needed relief and support to the affected communities as they work towards recovery and rebuilding in the aftermath of the cyclone.
