Mizoram MP Urges Centre to Expedite Highway Repairs Ahead of Monsoon

NEW DELHI— Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, Mizoram’s lone Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, has urged the Central Government to fast-track the repair and development of critical highways in the state before the onset of the monsoon. In a meeting with Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta, held in the national capital on Wednesday, the MP emphasized the urgent need for action by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), according to an official statement.

Vanlalhmangaiha specifically pressed for immediate improvements on the vital National Highway-6 (NH-306), particularly along the stretch between Vairengte and Sairang, which connects Mizoram’s capital Aizawl to Silchar in Assam. Describing the route as Mizoram’s “lifeline,” he highlighted the vulnerability of the highway to landslides and damages during heavy rainfall, which could disrupt essential connectivity and supply chains.

In addition to swift repairs, the MP advocated for the use of rigid pavement or concrete in future upgrades to enhance the durability of roads, given the state’s high annual rainfall and frequent weather-related disruptions. He stressed that long-term resilience in road infrastructure is key to ensuring uninterrupted access and development.

Minister Tamta assured Vanlalhmangaiha of all possible assistance from the Centre and said that the concerns raised would be taken up with urgency, particularly with NHIDCL officials managing the infrastructure projects in the Northeast.
