Mizoram Police Foil Attempt to Smuggle Exotic Animals
Northeast Desk, 30th May: In a swift and commendable operation, Mizoram police intercepted a vehicle at the Kanhmun police check post, uncovering a clandestine attempt to transport 24 exotic animals. The incident occurred on May 30 when vigilant officials halted a vehicle belonging to Chawngthanmawi, a resident of Tripura’s Amapur district.
Inspector General of Police and Chief Public Relations Officer of Mizoram Police, Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, disclosed that during routine checks at the Kanhmun Police check post, officers stumbled upon a shocking discovery. Concealed within the vehicle were 18 snakes, four turtles, and two monkeys, highlighting the severity of the illicit operation.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the driver, acting under the directives of an individual identified as Binoi Molsom, also known as Sanga Molsom, was tasked with transporting the exotic animals. The journey was slated to commence from Zodin Bus Stand in Aizawl, Mizoram, and conclude at the Zo Sumo Travels Counter in Samuli Bazar, Agartala, Tripura.
Promptly responding to the unfolding situation, law enforcement authorities swiftly located and apprehended Binoi Molsom, the alleged orchestrator of the smuggling attempt. Their timely intervention thwarted the illicit trafficking of exotic animals and ensured accountability for those involved.
The rescued animals, now under the custody of the Kanhmun Forest Department in Mizoram, will undergo further legal proceedings to safeguard their welfare and uphold the law. The Mizoram Police’s proactive stance underscores their commitment to combatting wildlife crime and preserving biodiversity.
