Mizoram Police Honor Martyrs on Commemoration Day

Aizawl — The Mizoram Police held a solemn Commemoration Day Parade today, honoring the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

The event took place at various district and battalion headquarters, culminating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Martyrs Memorial located at the 1st Battalion MAP Headquarters in Aizawl.

Mizoram’s Director General of Police (DGP), Anil Shukla IPS, led the tribute, joined by senior police officials and representatives from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), and Assam Rifles. Together, they paid their respects to the 54 martyrs of the Mizoram Police who have made the ultimate sacrifice since 1966.

Every year, October 21 is observed as Police Commemoration Day across the country, dedicated to remembering the sacrifices made by police personnel who have lost their lives while defending the nation’s borders. This date holds historical significance, recalling the tragic events of October 21, 1959, when a police unit from the 3rd Battalion CRPF, under the command of DCIO Karam Singh, was ambushed by Chinese forces in the Hot Springs region of Ladakh. This confrontation resulted in the deaths of ten police officers, with seven others injured or captured.

In recognition of this tragic incident, the Annual Conference of Inspector Generals of Police in 1960 passed a resolution to officially designate October 21 as Police Commemoration Day, ensuring that the bravery of these officers would never be forgotten.

The toll of sacrifice continues to be felt today, as recent statistics reveal that 216 police personnel lost their lives in the line of duty between September 1, 2023, and August 31, 2024. Since the country gained independence on August 15, 1947, a staggering 36,449 policemen have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Today’s commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the dedication and bravery displayed by police officers across India, underscoring their commitment to safeguarding the nation and maintaining peace and order.
