Mizoram Prepares Young Athletes for 2036 Olympics with ‘Empowering Mizoram Sports’ Programme
Aizawl: The Mizoram government is taking significant steps to prepare its young athletes for the 2036 Olympics, which India aims to host, as part of an ambitious plan to nurture sporting talent from a young age. Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar made this announcement in the state Assembly on Wednesday.
As part of the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) programme, which is integrated into the state’s ‘Bana Kaih’ (Handholding) scheme, children between the ages of 8 and 15 are being provided with basic coaching to develop their skills and prepare them for future sporting competitions.
Launched by Chief Minister Lalduhoma in January 2025, the programme focuses on identifying and nurturing talent, even in the most remote villages of Mizoram. The state government has committed Rs 2.5 crore to the initiative and is adopting a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure active community involvement and sustainable growth.
Minister Hmar emphasized that the ultimate goal is to see Mizo athletes competing at the highest international levels, with priority given to disciplines where Mizo athletes have the potential to win medals. The government is also working with sports experts from other states to improve coaching standards and plans to procure modern sports equipment to strengthen training facilities for the youth.
With these strategic investments and partnerships, Mizoram aims to build a strong foundation for its athletes, setting the stage for participation in the 2036 Olympics and beyond.
