Mizoram Pushes for Separate Cadre for Northeast as IAS Officers, Organizations Urge Enhanced Regional Governance
Aizawl, Mizoram — In a bid to bolster governance and administrative efficiency, two prominent Mizoram-based organizations and the state’s IAS association have urged the state government to advocate for a dedicated cadre of officers exclusively for the northeastern region.
The Mizoram IAS Association, Zoram Research Foundation, and the All India Service representatives recently met with Chief Minister Lalduhoma to emphasize the potential benefits of such a cadre, according to an official statement.
Currently, Mizoram relies on officers from the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, a shared pool that also supplies IAS, IPS, and IFS officers to several other regions. Advocates for a separate cadre argue that a dedicated northeastern cadre would enable more focused governance, as officers with deep, localized understanding of the region’s unique needs could serve with greater continuity and relevance.
The delegation highlighted that such a cadre would open up tailored opportunities for officers, fostering specialized regional expertise and thereby improving administrative effectiveness in Mizoram and other northeastern states. This dedicated cadre, they argued, would align with Mizoram’s specific development goals and cultural context, providing continuity in governance and fostering a stronger connection between administrators and the communities they serve.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma assured the group that their concerns would be addressed and promised to bring the matter before the Cabinet for further deliberation. In response, he committed to advocating for the initiative with the central government, signaling the state’s readiness to pursue enhanced administrative infrastructure that could benefit the northeastern region as a whole.
