Mizoram Records Over 900 Suicides in Past Decade: Police Report
Northeast Desk, 11th September: In a sobering report, Mizoram’s Aizawl Superintendent of Police Rahool Alwal revealed that over 900 people, including 154 women, have died by suicide in the state over the past ten years.
- Statistics: Between 2014 and July 2024, 948 individuals ended their lives, with 84% being men and 16% women.
- Age Groups: The majority of suicides occurred in the 20-39 age bracket (584 people), followed by the 40-59 age group (201 people). Additionally, 117 suicides were recorded among individuals aged 1-19, and 40 were aged 60 and above.
- Current Year: In 2024 alone, 49 people have died by suicide.
The data was highlighted during the observation of World Suicide Prevention Day in Aizawl on September 10, a global initiative supported by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization to raise awareness about preventing suicides.
