Mizoram Requests 30,000 Citizens of Myanmar Be Granted Refugee Status

Guwahati: The Mizoram government has voiced for granting the state’s present residents of Myanmar refugee status.

The Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana verified this occurrence in an interview with news organisation.

At least 30,000 citizens of Myanmar are now residing in various areas of Mizoram.

Over 30,000 citizens of Myanmar have been fed by Mizoram over the past 20 months, the Mizoram minister informed.

Notably, a number of NGOs and other civil society groups in Mizoram have been calling for the state to award the state’s residents who are from Myanmar refugee status.

Following the military takeover of the democratically elected civilian administration last year these citizens of Myanmar fled their nation.

The Mizoram home minister also disclosed that the state is considering writing to the federal government to request that it recognise the citizens of Myanmar as refugees.

“Those who would like to continue their education in Mizoram, our government has allowed them to do this. Some of them appear in the HSLC (Class 10) examination also,” the Mizoram home minister said.

Additionally, he denied the claims that these citizens of Myanmar were involved in the trafficking of drugs and weapons.

A 510 km long porous border separates Mizoram from Myanmar.
