Mizoram Set to Welcome Rail Connectivity as Bairabi–Sairang Line Nears Inauguration
In a significant stride for regional connectivity, the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram stands complete and poised for inauguration. This ambitious project, designed to seamlessly link Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, with the extensive Indian railway network, has successfully navigated through formidable geographical, engineering, and logistical hurdles, marking a transformative chapter in the state’s transportation landscape.
Officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) have confirmed that the line has received its crucial safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), paving the way for its grand inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming days. The new rail link, once operational, promises to offer a seamless journey to Aizawl via Silchar, treating passengers to breathtaking vistas of Mizoram’s undulating hills, verdant forests, and the vibrant cultural tapestry of the “Land of the Hill People.”
“This landmark achievement propels Mizoram into the league of the fourth Northeastern state whose capital is now firmly connected to the national railway grid,” an NFR spokesperson proudly stated. “The railway will not only significantly enhance connectivity and curtail travel time but also serve as a powerful catalyst for regional economic growth and tourism development.”
The engineering marvel underpinning this project is truly remarkable, featuring an impressive 48 tunnels stretching over 12.853 km, along with 55 major and 87 minor bridges. Additionally, it incorporates five road overbridges and nine road underbridges. Among these, Bridge No. 196 commands particular attention, towering at a height of 104 metres – a staggering 42 metres taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar.
“This line is set to revolutionise accessibility in the region, stimulate commercial activity, generate much-needed employment, and uplift small businesses thriving near the station zones,” the official added, highlighting the broader socio-economic impact. “It will also substantially improve inter-state mobility and connectivity across the entire Northeast.”
The genesis of this pivotal project dates back to November 29, 2014, when Prime Minister Modi ceremonially laid its foundation during a remote event from Maligaon Railway Stadium. The project was meticulously implemented in four key phases: Bairabi–Hortoki (16.72 km), commissioned in July 2024; Hortoki–Kawnpui (9.71 km), commissioned in June 2025; Kawnpui–Mualkhang (12.11 km), commissioned in June 2025; and Mualkhang–Sairang (12.84 km), also commissioned in June 2025. The final inspection of the Hortoki–Sairang stretch was diligently conducted by CRS (Northeast Frontier Circle) between June 6 and June 10, unequivocally marking the successful completion of the full alignment. It is noteworthy that the CRS had earlier authorised freight and passenger train operations on the Bairabi–Hortoki section on August 22, 2024. The revised sanctioned cost for this mega infrastructure venture stands at approximately Rs 5,021.45 crore, underscoring the scale and significance of this national asset.
