Mizoram: State Boundary Committee Approves “Approach Paper” for Border Talks With Assam
Guwahati: The Mizoram State Boundary Committee has accepted an “approach document” outlining the state’s position in the upcoming boundary negotiations with Assam, which are expected to take place in October.
Under the direction of its chairman and deputy chief minister Tawnluia, the committee convened on Friday in Aizawl to discuss the boundary dispute.
Political party and non-governmental organisation representatives reportedly stated their willingness to settle the boundary conflict with Assam during the conference.
During the conference, it was also decided to conduct a joint verification of the boundary areas that both Mizoram and Assam had asserted.
The panel also went through the joint statement that the Assam and Mizoram delegates signed in Aizawl on August 9 during the border negotiations.
Following a border impasse in July of last year, the state administration established the boundary committee, which includes representatives from all political parties and significant civil society organisations.
Assam’s Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram’s Zoramthanga had already agreed to convene chief minister-level talks in Delhi to settle the contentious border dispute, either in the latter half of August or in the first half of September.
