Mizoram: Torrential Rain Shuts Schools Across Aizawl, Authorities on High Alert Amid Red Alert Warning

AIZAWL — Schools across Aizawl District remained closed today following a night of relentless downpours that prompted a red alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), raising fears of potential landslides and flash floods. While no landslide incidents were reported as of 6 am, a rockfall at Chanmari Ramhlun road underscored the risks posed by the ongoing extreme weather.

The IMD’s warning, which predicted extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, led to swift action from the Mizoram government. Acting on recommendations from the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department and regional meteorological centres, the School Education Department announced the closure of all schools in the district on Wednesday evening as a precautionary measure.

Emergency protocols have been activated statewide, with both the State Emergency Operations Centre and district-level emergency centres on high alert. Officials have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in landslide-prone areas. Citizens in need of assistance have been directed to call the dedicated helplines — 1077, 1070, 0389-2342520 — or the all-purpose emergency number 112.

Authorities have also urged the public to immediately report any signs of slope instability, waterlogging, or damage to infrastructure to ensure rapid response and mitigation. The Disaster Management Department has reiterated its advisory for all residents to follow safety directives closely and remain vigilant during the unfolding weather emergency.

The current crisis brings back painful memories of the catastrophic landslides last May, when over 30 lives were lost after continuous rains triggered widespread devastation across Aizawl and nearby districts. In response to that tragedy, the state government has since enhanced disaster preparedness measures, strengthened early warning systems, and improved coordination between agencies.

As monitoring of the storm system continues, schools are expected to remain closed until conditions are deemed safe. State officials say decisions will be made on a day-to-day basis, with student and staff safety as the top priority.
