Mizoram: Torrential Rains Cause Widespread Disruptions; School Closures and Railway Service Halts

Northeast Desk, 28th August: A severe downpour that began early this morning has led to significant disruptions across Aizawl and Lunglei districts in Mizoram. The heavy rains, which started around 5 a.m., have resulted in widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure, prompting authorities to close all schools in the affected areas as a precautionary measure.

On August 26, the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) faced complications due to the heavy rains and subsequent soil erosion along the interstate railway track between Assam and Mizoram. The affected area near Killarbak, about 60 km from Hailakandi town, has led to a temporary suspension of railway services between the states.

NFR officials have stated that restoration work will only begin once water levels in the Dhaleswari River subside. “The restoration process will commence after an on-site verification by experts,” a senior NFR official informed The Assam Tribune. The severity of the soil erosion has caused significant delays, with restoration expected to take some time. Passenger train services between Bairabi in Mizoram and Silchar via Hailakandi have been rerouted in the meantime.
