Mizoram Yet to Receive Assam’s Response on Proposel To Defer Border Talks

Guwahati: Assam has not yet responded to the Mizoram government’s request to postpone the third session of border negotiations between the two states according to a senior official on Monday.

The two states were supposed to have boundary talks in Guwahati on November 4.

Prior to President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to the northeastern state, the Mizoram government had requested in writing that Assam postpone the scheduled border negotiations.

On the directive of the chief minister Zoramthanga, the home department’s assistant secretary Lalhriatpuia stated that they had recommended the negotiations be postponed to November 9–11.

“We are yet to receive response in the matter from Assam,” Lalhriatpuia said, adding that any change in schedule can be made once the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government agrees to it.

No Assam official could be reached for comment despite our best efforts.

According to reports, Droupadi Murmu is expected to visit Aizawl for two days on November 3.

In an effort to resolve the contentious border dispute amicably, the chief ministers of the two states held separate meetings in New Delhi in November of last year and September of this year.

The two neighbouring states’ border dispute has been an on-going difficult problem since two colonial demarcations in 1875 and 1933.
