Mizoram: Zokhawthar Bridge Reopens with Restricted Movement Between India and Myanmar
Northeast Desk, 21st April: Following a temporary closure due to the Lok Sabha MP election, the Zokhawthar bridge, situated at Champhai district and linking India and Myanmar, was reopened on April 20. However, reports indicate that movements will be restricted unlike before, with strict surveillance by the Assam Rifles at the bridge and other connectivity points through the Tiau river.
According to the Zokhawthar Branch YMA President, the border reopening comes with limitations, and movements will be closely monitored by the Assam Rifles. Exceptions will be made for individuals facing medical emergencies, students commuting for education, and other emergency situations, as stated by the paramilitary force.
The Assam Rifles announced that the border reopening will continue until April 30, with complete closure scheduled from May 1, 2024, onwards.
Upon inquiry by the community leaders of Zokhawthar regarding the dissolution of the free movement regime between India and Myanmar, Assam Rifles officials refrained from providing definitive answers, citing orders from higher authorities. Furthermore, the paramilitary force requested community leaders of Zokhawthar to inform the Myanmar People’s Army PDF situated at Hualngoram and the Tiau Youth Association about their meeting.
The Zokhawthar border serves as a vital conduit for trade, commerce, and people-to-people interaction between India and Myanmar, underscoring the significance of the reopening despite the imposed restrictions.
