Mizoram: ZPM Rushes Aid to Stranded Commuters as NH-6 Crisis Deepens

Aizawl: In a swift and decisive move, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) Legislature Party has mobilised an emergency response to the escalating crisis along National Highway-6. A severely damaged stretch between Kawnpui and Sairang has crippled the state’s vital supply chain, leaving scores of commuters stranded.

An urgent meeting, convened late Saturday night by PWD Minister Pu Vanlalhlana, saw the attendance of 16 Ministers and MLAs. The party voiced grave concerns over the sluggish pace of road repairs and the mounting distress faced by travellers stuck on the route.

To alleviate the immediate hardships, the government has sanctioned Rs 3 lakh for providing food and water to those stranded. Relief operations commenced on Sunday, overseen by the Kolasib Deputy Commissioner. Prominent leaders, including Kolasib MLA and Deputy Speaker Pu Lalfamkima, MLA Pu Jeje Lalpekhlua, and CM’s Adviser Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah, have been assigned to supervise relief efforts in their respective zones.

Further bolstering the response, additional police personnel are being deployed to maintain order and facilitate ongoing relief work. A new directive mandates daily visits by Ministers and MLAs to the affected site to personally monitor repair progress. Senior PWD officials will also remain stationed on-site to expedite execution and ensure accountability.

The state government is actively sourcing construction materials, with boulders being procured both locally and from the Silchar area. Crucial equipment and fuel support have been provided by various government officials, including three trucks and a roller from Minister Pu F Rodingliana, and three JCBs from CM’s Adviser Er H Ginzalala.

A dedicated Crisis Management Committee has been established to coordinate the multi-agency response. On Sunday morning, senior PWD engineers were briefed by Ministers at the PWD Minister’s residence. A review of the latest updates was conducted by a team comprising Ministers Dr Vanlalthlana, Pu F. Rodingliana, Prof Lalnilawma, and Advisers Pu Lalmuanpuia Punte and Pu TBC Lalvenchhunga.

Field visits are already underway. Ministers Dr. Vanlalthlana and Prof Lalnilawma inspected the repair works, while Pu Jeje Lalpekhlua and Dr Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah oversaw food supply distribution. During a visit to Mualkhang, NHIDCL officials pointed to extensive earth-cutting for railway line construction as a potential cause for the road’s deterioration. The government has pledged a formal inquiry into the matter.

Supply Minister Pu B Lalchhanzova, stationed at the site since Friday night, continues to manage the crucial transport of essential commodities into the affected region.

The ZPM Legislature Party has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the swift restoration of NH-6 and to ensuring the construction of more durable infrastructure in the future. These concerted efforts align with Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma’s directive for an all-hands-on-deck approach to the ongoing crisis.
