Mizoram: In a strategic move to elevate Mizoram’s sports landscape, Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services Lalnghinglova Hmar held a high-level meeting with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi.
The discussions focused on strengthening Mizoram’s sports initiatives and addressing its pivotal role in India’s aspirations to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
During the meeting, Hmar emphasized the importance of Mizoram’s contribution to the national sporting ecosystem. Highlighting ongoing efforts, he cited the *Mizoram Sports Conclave, held in June 2024, as a cornerstone event showcasing the state’s dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a culture of sports. Additionally, he introduced the *“Bana Kaih” scheme**, a flagship program aimed at enhancing coaching and training facilities for young athletes, underlining Mizoram’s commitment to grassroots development.
Raising concerns about the limited budget allocated to sports in Mizoram, Hmar pressed for increased funding and called for urgent upgrades to the state’s sports infrastructure. He urged the Union government to involve corporate bodies and public sector undertakings (PSUs) in supporting Mizoram’s sporting aspirations. “To realize the full potential of Mizoram’s athletes, we need stronger infrastructure and resources,” Hmar stressed.
Union Minister Mandaviya applauded Mizoram’s efforts and acknowledged the state’s untapped potential in shaping India’s sports future. He assured Hmar of the government’s support in strengthening infrastructure and proposed the implementation of a “One State-One PSU” model to channel targeted investments for sports development. The Union Minister also suggested a nationwide joint meeting of state sports ministers and PSUs to streamline collaborative efforts for advancing sports across the country.
Accompanying Minister Hmar were Pi Sumita Dawra, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Employment, John Tanpuia, Director of LESDE, and H. Lalramenga, PS to the Minister.
