Mizoram’s Thenzawl to Be Transformed into ‘Peace City’ Housing 10 Lakh People, Announces CM Lalduhoma
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform Thenzawl, a scenic census town in Serchhip district, into a ‘Peace City’ (Muanna Khawpui) designed to accommodate up to 10 lakh residents. The announcement was made during his address at a conference of the Vantawng group of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) held at Buangpui village.
Lalduhoma, who represents the Serchhip constituency where Thenzawl is located, stated that he had already discussed the project with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is hopeful of receiving financial support from the Centre. “I have also discussed the plan with the 16th Finance Commission. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has approved Rs 10 crore to develop a master plan for the project. However, it will take time to materialise,” he said.
The proposed Peace City aims to become a major urban hub in Mizoram while maintaining its tranquil setting. Located approximately 90 km from Aizawl, Thenzawl is already a known centre for Mizo handloom and a growing tourist destination, home to attractions like the Vantawng Fall — the highest waterfall in the state — a deer park, and Mizoram’s only golf course.
In a bid to enhance tourism, Lalduhoma also announced that his government plans to develop a ropeway at Vantawng Fall, further boosting the region’s appeal to visitors.
The Chief Minister also touched upon the state’s ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse, highlighting the government’s focus on moral reformation. He praised civil society organisations, particularly the YMA, for their active partnership in driving social change, ensuring security, and fighting the drug menace across the state.
The vision for Thenzawl as a ‘Peace City’ represents a bold stride towards sustainable urban development while honouring Mizoram’s cultural heritage and natural beauty.
