MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha dares Congress to suspend him from party

Guwahati, 17th February: Assam’s Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, has boldly challenged the Indian National Congress by openly expressing his support for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, daring the party to suspend him.

Purkayastha, the Congress MLA from Karimganj North constituency, has thrown his weight behind Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for promoting inclusive development in the state. His audacious move has raised eyebrows, with the exact motivations behind it remaining unclear.

Addressing the media, Purkayastha declared, “I have not put my foot in two boats…I don’t mind getting suspended.” He expressed dismay at the Congress party’s stance, suggesting that by criticizing Himanta Biswa Sarma, they are disrespecting the Assamese, Bodo, and Bengali communities.

Asserting that Himanta Biswa Sarma represents the interests of over three crore people, Purkayastha emphasized the need to acknowledge his contributions to the state’s development.

Furthermore, Purkayastha challenged the state unit of the Congress party to take action against him for his support to Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting his recent resignation from the post of state working president.

In a fiery commentary on the upcoming Lok Sabha election, Purkayastha criticized the state unit’s lack of courage to contest in constituencies beyond Nagaon and Karimganj. He lamented the dearth of leadership emerging from other constituencies and expressed disappointment at the limited focus of the party’s electoral strategy.

Purkayastha’s bold stance underscores the internal dynamics within the Congress party in Assam and hints at broader rifts within the political landscape of the state as the elections draw near.
