M’laya assembly elections 2023: 5 sitting MLAs to join UDP, claims party chief

Guwahati: Ahead of Meghalaya’s assembly elections, members appear to be continuing to defect.

United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh claimed that as many as five current Meghalaya MLAs is planning to join the party soon.

Lyngdoh said that the names of the five MLAs will be on the UDP’s second list of candidates if they decide to join the party.

“There are candidates who are still in service and their names cannot be declared, and there are also sitting MLAs who will wait till the end of the term or resign,” Lyngdoh said. 

Speculations are rife that Meghalaya TMC MLA – Shitlang Pale, HSPDP’s Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, suspended Meghalaya Congress MLAs – Mayralborn Syiem and PT Sawkmie and Independent MLA – Lambor Malngiang are likely to join the UDP. 

Notably, the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Meghalaya released its first list of candidates for the state’s upcoming assembly elections on Tuesday, December 6.

There are 32 names on the first list of candidates the UDP in Meghalaya has announced.

Announcement of other candidates by the UDP in Meghalaya for the 2023 state assembly elections is expected soon, probably before Christmas. 

Moreover, Metbah Lyngdoh, president of UDP in Meghalaya refuted rumours of internal strife in the party.

Early in the next year, Meghalaya is slated to hold elections for its legislative body.
