Manipur CM N Biren Singh Acknowledges Relief Efforts Amid Cyclone Remal Aftermath

Northeast Desk, 30th May: In the wake of Cyclone Remal’s aftermath, Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to the microblogging site X to express his gratitude for the relentless efforts of emergency services and local organizations in responding to the crisis.

Singh’s post highlighted the dedication and bravery exhibited by those involved in the relief operations, emphasizing their extraordinary courage and efficiency in tackling the immediate challenges posed by the cyclone.

The impact of Cyclone Remal was particularly severe in Imphal, where Raj Medicity hospital faced significant operational challenges due to flooding. The inundation of the hospital’s ground floor following heavy rainfall necessitated the evacuation of patients to alternative facilities, including RIMS, JNIMS, and several other hospitals.

The rescue operation at Raj Medicity, conducted on the evening of May 29, involved coordinated efforts from Arambai Tengol, State Forces, and the State Disaster Response Force team.

Several prominent areas of Imphal, such as Khwairamband Ima Market, Hotel Classic Grande, DM College campus, and the Manipur Press Club, also experienced severe flooding. Although the intensity of rainfall reduced compared to the peak on May 28, substantial precipitation persisted in several districts until 3 pm on May 29.

Rainfall data recorded on May 29, provided by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, showed variations across districts, with Kakching district receiving 6 mm, while Tamenglong district recorded the highest at 37.6 mm. Bishnupur district reported 32.2 mm, Imphal West 25.2 mm, and Imphal East 17.2 mm of rainfall.

The preceding day, May 28, witnessed even more intense rainfall, exacerbating the situation across the state. The Directorate of Environment recorded substantial amounts of precipitation in various districts, underscoring the challenges posed by Cyclone Remal’s impact on Manipur.
