Monsoon Mayhem Looms: Phek Braces for Natural Calamities

Phek: As the annual monsoon clouds gather, the district of Phek in Nagaland is battening down the hatches, with the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issuing a stern public advisory today. The warning comes amidst predictions of heavy rainfall, raising concerns about potential natural hazards across the region.

The official notification highlights the particular vulnerability of Phek’s lowland and foothill areas, where sustained downpours could trigger a cascade of issues. Authorities are anticipating widespread waterlogging, sudden flash floods, and an increased risk of landslides. Furthermore, the advisory points to a probable rise in water levels across rivers and streams, especially in key catchment zones, posing a significant threat to communities residing in close proximity.

In a proactive move to safeguard lives, citizens have been strongly cautioned against venturing too close to riverbanks. Recreational activities such as picnics or fishing, typically enjoyed by the district’s residents, are now deemed unsafe and should be avoided until the monsoon season abates. This precautionary measure aims to prevent unfortunate incidents often associated with swollen waterways.

The DDMA has activated a high-alert status for all key administrative bodies and community leaders. Area administrative officers, heads of departments, village disaster management authorities, village council chairmen, head Gaon Buras (GBs), and ward authorities have been explicitly directed to remain vigilant and ready to spring into action. The directive underscores the urgent need for a coordinated and prompt response to any emergencies that may arise from natural calamities during this challenging period.

Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to public safety, the district administration has appealed for widespread cooperation from all stakeholders. The collective effort of government agencies, local authorities, and the community is deemed crucial in mitigating the impact of the impending monsoon and ensuring the well-being of Phek’s residents.
