Monsoon Onslaught: Meghalaya Braces for Deluge with 24/7 Helplines

Shillong: Meghalaya is on high alert as the monsoon intensifies, prompting state authorities to roll out comprehensive preparedness measures, including round-the-clock emergency helplines. The immediate impact of heavy rainfall was palpable on major highways, causing significant traffic disruptions and underscoring the urgency of these arrangements.

The Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) announced on Thursday that citizens can now access immediate assistance through dedicated hotlines 112 and 1070. These numbers are operational continuously throughout the monsoon season, and officials have appealed for their responsible use to ensure efficient response during genuine emergencies.

“We appeal to the public to be alert and vigilant during this monsoon season,” urged the Executive Director of the State Disaster Management Authority, stressing the pivotal role of community cooperation in mitigating disaster impacts.

The efficacy of these preparations was put to an immediate test as National Highway-6 near the 12th Mile experienced severe waterlogging after a spell of intense rain. The Ri Bhoi police were quick to issue traffic advisories via social media, alerting commuters to treacherous road conditions and urging them to exercise utmost caution.

“All commuters are advised to drive carefully and avoid overspeeding,” read the police advisory, which also highlighted the critical need to prioritise pedestrian safety amidst challenging driving conditions.

State officials are actively encouraging residents to disseminate emergency contact information within their localities, recognising public awareness as a cornerstone of effective disaster response. With weather forecasts predicting continued heavy rainfall across the region, these proactive measures are indeed timely and crucial for the well-being of the state.
