Monsoon Session Set: Parliament to Convene July 21st Amidst Critical Times
New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent for the Monsoon Session of Parliament to commence on July 21, 2025, and conclude on August 21, 2025. This was announced by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on Wednesday.
The significant month-long session will observe no sittings on August 13 and 14, owing to the nation’s Independence Day celebrations, as confirmed by Rijiju in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The upcoming parliamentary session arrives at a pivotal juncture, marking the first sitting since the May 7 launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’. This crucial governmental initiative was a direct response to the horrific Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which tragically claimed 26 lives. The incident had triggered widespread public anguish and amplified calls from the Opposition for an urgent parliamentary session to deliberate on matters of national security.
This session also follows closely on the heels of a demanding Budget Session that kicked off on January 31, 2025. That session was conducted in two phases, comprising a total of 26 sittings – nine in the first phase and seventeen in the second. The Budget Session saw significant legislative activity, including the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill and extensive discussions on Demands for Grants for the Ministries of Railways, Jal Shakti, and Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. The Lok Sabha, on March 21, cleared the demands for the remaining Ministries and simultaneously passed the Appropriation Bill.
Further legislative milestones from the Budget Session included the Lok Sabha’s approval of several Appropriation Bills on March 11. These notably encompassed the Second and Final Batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for FY 2024–25, Excess Demands for Grants for FY 2021–22, Supplementary Demands for Grants for Manipur for FY 2024–25, and Demands for Grant on Account for Manipur for FY 2025–26. The Finance Bill, 2025, received the Lok Sabha’s nod on March 25. Concurrently, the Rajya Sabha engaged in thorough deliberations concerning the performance of key ministries, including Education, Railways, Health & Family Welfare, and Home Affairs, underscoring a packed legislative calendar leading into the Monsoon Session.
