Morbi municipality chief officer suspended, days after bridge collapse

Guwahati: The Gujarat government suspended Chief Officer of Morbi Municipality Sandipsinh Zala in relation to the bridge collapse tragedy that resulted in 135 fatalities, a senior official informed on Friday.

Morbi District Collector said, “The state Urban Development Department has suspended Chief Officer of Morbi Municipality Sandipsinh Zala.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the scene of the bridge collapse in Morbi of Gujarat.

The Prime Minister spoke with individuals engaged in rescue and relief efforts at the scene of the collapse of the Machchhu River Bridge. PM Modi met the injured at the Civil Hospital in Morbi, along with Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel.

Over 100 individuals are receiving treatment for their injuries after a cable suspension bridge in Morbi town fell on Sunday, sending people into the Machchhu River. At least 135 people, including women and children, were killed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a high-level meeting on Monday at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar in order to assess the situation in Morbi.

The rescue and relief efforts that have been going on since the terrible incident in Morbi were explained to the prime minister. Every aspect of the incident was explored.

Prime Minister emphasised on ensuring that those affected get all possible assistance, a PMO release said.

The high-level meeting was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Bhai Patel, Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Chief Secretary and DGP of Gujarat, along with other top officials including from the Home Department of the state and Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority.
