Morigaon Police Recovers Stolen Rs 93 Lakh in a Cyber-Fraud Bust
Assam: Morigaon Police, in a remarkable display of investigative prowess, have successfully recovered a staggering ₹93 lakh that was fraudulently siphoned off by a group of cybercriminals from Uttar Pradesh. The funds were returned to the rightful owner, a local businessman who had fallen victim to an elaborate online scheme. The swift and decisive action by the police has been widely lauded, bringing a sense of relief and security to the community.
The victim, Piyush Kanti Dey, the Managing Director of Progressive Fertilisers Private Limited, based in Jagiroad, had lost over ₹96 lakh to the fraudsters. The audacious crime came to light on May 5 this year, when a case was registered at the Jagiroad Police Station. The culprits had reportedly posed as Dey himself and cunningly tricked his accountant into transferring the substantial amount from the company’s bank account. This incident underscores the growing threat of sophisticated cyber-scams that target businesses and individuals alike.
Acting on the First Information Report (FIR), the Morigaon Police launched a comprehensive investigation. The district’s Crime Branch, under the vigilant supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Samiran Baishya, led the charge. The team meticulously pieced together the digital trail left by the criminals, a task that demanded a high degree of technical expertise and relentless dedication. Their efforts, spanning nearly three months, culminated in a significant breakthrough.
The painstaking investigation finally paid off when the team successfully traced and recovered ₹93 lakh from the clutches of the cyber fraudsters. The recovered amount was ceremoniously handed back to Piyush Kanti Dey, who was visibly moved and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Morigaon Police. Dey’s appreciation highlights the immense trust and confidence that the public places in the police force when they deliver justice. The investigation is still ongoing, with the police determined to unearth the full extent of the criminal network and bring all those involved to book. This case serves as a stern warning to cybercriminals that the long arm of the law will not hesitate to cross state lines to ensure justice prevails.
