Mother Elephant, Her Calf Killed By Speeding Train In Assam’s Jorhat

The incident took place on Sunday night when a herd of elephants crossed a railroad track, and the 22-year-old female elephant and her 10-month-old youngster were struck by a Rajdhani express train.
They added that the female elephant was 22 years old and the calf was 10 months old and that the incident occurred on Sunday night while an elephant herd was crossing the railroad tracks.
“The forest department had alerted railway officials about the movement of wild elephants and requested them to ensure that trains slowed down while passing the area. But they did not do that,” said Jorhat district forest officer Biken Pegu.
“One female elephant and her calf were killed. We will investigate and take action as per law,” Pegu added.
An adult wild elephant died on Wednesday in the Sanfan forest area of Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district after getting into contact with a live electrical wire. The incident took place when a herd of wild elephants left the woodland region in search of food.
When a crew arrived on the location to inspect the elephant after receiving the information, the animal had already passed away.
