Mother of Delivery Agent Assaulted by Police in Guwahati Condemns Officer’s Actions
Guwahati: The mother of the delivery agent who was assaulted by a police officer in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar has condemned the officer’s conduct, calling the incident both inappropriate and unnecessary.
Baby Hazarika, who is also a member of the 12th Police Battalion, expressed her deep disappointment and concern over the incident, which has sparked widespread outrage.
Speaking out on the matter, Hazarika stated, “What the police officer did was wrong. There was no need to resort to such force. If there was an issue, he could have issued a fine instead.” As someone who works in the police force, Hazarika emphasized the importance of professionalism and respectful behavior within the department. “We, too, work in the police department, and good behavior should be a priority for all officers,” she added.
The incident, which occurred on the evening of November 15 near the Jail Road traffic point in Fancy Bazar, was captured on a bystander’s mobile phone and quickly went viral. The footage shows a police officer aggressively confronting the delivery agent after allegedly running a red light. The officer can be seen grabbing the delivery agent by the neck and shouting at him, “Where do you think you are going?” and “I will kill you,” despite pleas from onlookers to stop the assault.
According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation escalated when the officer dragged the delivery agent to the side of the road and continued the violent encounter. One witness claimed that when the officer noticed the incident being filmed, he threatened to take action against the person recording the video, warning them to “mind their business.”
In response to the incident, Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh took immediate action, announcing the suspension of Inspector Bhargav Borbora, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Panbazar Police Station, involved in the assault. DGP Singh stated, “The behavior of Inspector Bhargav Borbora is unacceptable. He is being placed under suspension with immediate effect, and CP Guwahati has been advised to post another officer immediately.” A departmental inquiry into the incident has also been ordered.
A police official later justified the officer’s actions, claiming that the delivery agent had ignored instructions to stop and attempted to enter a restricted “No Entry” zone, which led to the confrontation. However, the response from the public and the suspension of the officer signal the seriousness with which the authorities are taking this case.
