Mother Reunited with Child Three Years After Birth in Assam’s Barpeta
Guwahati: A mother was reunited with her child in Barpeta district of Assam after three years following a court order based on a DNA report.
The child who should have been born on Nazma Khanam, was accidentally given to another Kokrajhar family, who nurtured him for many years.
Khanam had to wait three years and fight a legal struggle to be able to hold her son in her lap.
Two pregnant women with nearly identical surnames – Nazma Khanam of Barpeta and Nazma Khatun of Korkrajhar district – were admitted to the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta in May 2019.
They had two infants on May 3, but Khatun’s child was stillborn.
The hospital accidentally gave the living baby to Khatun instead of his original mother Khanam and the stillborn baby to Khanam who was admitted to the ICU right after birth and couldn’t see her baby. Khanam’s child was placed in a child care facility.
The medical staff gave over the body of an infant to Khanam’s husband a few hours later despite Khanam’s assurances that it was not her kid. The hospital authorities refused to believe her and handed over the stillborn to them.
