Mumbai: Lata Mangeshkar to be cremated at Shivaji Park

Guwahati: Legendary Singer Lata Mangeshkar funeral will be held on the open ground of Shivaji Park at around 6:16pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to pay tribute to the iconic singer at Shivaji Park at around 5.45-6.00 pm.

Preparations are underway at Shivaji Park ground where Lata Mangeshkar will be cremated on Sunday evening.

The Maharashtra government has declared a state funeral for the singer, who died on Sunday morning as a result of post Covid-19 complications. She was 92.

Thousands of police officers and civic workers have been posted at Shivaji Park for the cremation.

Addressing the media, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach the funeral ground at around 5:45-6:00 pm today after which Lata Mangeshkarji’s last rites will be conducted at around 6:15-6:30 pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will go straight from the airport to Shivaji Park to pay his respects to Lata Mangeshkar, who died this morning at Breach Candy Hospital.

Aaditya Thackeray, the son of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, has been in charge of the preparations at Shivaji Park. His uncle and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray is reportedly coordinating with the Mangeshkar family.

The Maharashtra government has declared Monday a public holiday in honour of the iconic singer’s death.

Mangeshkar’s mortal remains are currently on display at her home, Prabhu Kunj. The last rites will be performed by a few priests who have already arrived at the cremation location.

In cooperation with Mumbai Police and the Mumbai Traffic Police, the BMC has taken arrangements. A map shared by the BMC has stated that several restrictions of traffic movement have been imposed on Keluskar Road and SVS Road at Shivaji Park. A segment of the route has been designated for VIP traffic, while another has been designated for normal traffic.
