Muslim Rashtriya Manch Supports Repeal of Marriage Act, Opposes CAA Protests
Guwahati, 3rd March: The Assam unit of the Muslim Rashtriya Manch, an organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has endorsed the state government’s decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935 in Assam’s Guwahati.
The Manch believes this step will aid in curbing child marriage in the state, with convenor Alkas Hussain stating that it will rescue Muslim boys and girls from perilous situations.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s pledge to eradicate child marriage by 2026 received commendation from the Manch, while Hussain criticized certain Muslim MLAs for neglecting the issue.
However, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has threatened legal action, citing violations of the Kazis Act of 1880 and disrespect toward Kazis (Muslim jurists).
Furthermore, the Muslim Rashtriya Manch advocates for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, advocating for a single set of laws for all citizens. Hussain lauded the central government’s efforts in banning triple talaq and initiating development projects over the past decade.
In light of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement about implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) before the Lok Sabha elections, concerns have arisen regarding potential protests.
The Muslim Rashtriya Manch cautioned against such protests, citing the significant losses suffered by Assam during the anti-CAA agitation in 2019. Hussain emphasized the importance of awaiting the Supreme Court’s judgment on the matter and respecting it.
Despite the BJP not fielding any Muslim candidates in the upcoming elections, Hussain asserted that the party prioritizes winnability in its selections. He hinted that the BJP’s ally, Asom Gana Parishad, may nominate a Muslim candidate in the Muslim-majority Dhubri constituency.
