Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to four years in prison

Guwahati: Detained Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was condemned to a second four-year prison sentence on Monday, the second in a series of rulings against the deposed civilian leader.

According to a person familiar with the court proceedings, the Nobel Laureate was found guilty of various offences, including possession of unregistered walkie-talkies.

Suu Kyi, 76, served as Myanmar’s state counsellor and de facto leader before being detained and charged by the military in a coup 11 months ago. She faces almost a dozen counts with cumulative potential penalties of more than 100 years.

According to the reports of CNN, the charges include several counts of corruption (each carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison), violating COVID-19 pandemic restrictions during the 2020 election campaign, incitement, illegally importing and possessing walkie talkies, and violating the colonial-era Official Secrets Act (each carrying a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison).

It may be mentioned that she has denied all claims, and her supporters claim the charges are politically motivated.
