Myanmar: Burmese Junta enlists ULFA to fight Resistance Forces

Guwahati: The Myanmar junta inducted ULFA and other North-East insurgents to battle the people’s resistance organization that has been battling the country’s military takeover.

As a result, the developing friendship between ULFA supremo Paresh Barua and Assam Chief Minister  Himanta Biswa Sarma has come to an end.

Following the Assam election of 2021, there was a glimmer of hope for long-term peace when the ULFA responded favourably to  Sharma’s demand for peace. However, the early enthusiasm has faded in recent months, and  Sarma has moved his focus to the ULFA’s pro-talk group rather than waiting for Paresh Barua.

According to claims in Myanmar’s media, the military regime has enrolled all of the North East Insurgents as allies. This is a huge relief for organizations like ULFA, who had been having severe problems because they were no longer secure in Wa State, which borders China, while Indian authorities were also putting pressure on them.

Separatist insurgent organizations from northeast India have long been accused by resistance groups in Chin State and adjoining the Sagaing Region of fighting for the Myanmar military.

Aside from the ULFA, the Meitei armed groups operating within Myanmar from the northeast Indian state of Manipur have also allied with the junta.

The ULFA has allegedly signed an agreement with the junta, according to local opposition groups. However, the group has denied working for any army or dictatorship.

Since the February 1 coup, Chin State and the surrounding Sagaing Region have been the most unrest in Myanmar. Against junta troops, a coalition of People’s Defense Forces (PDF) and ethnic armed organizations, mainly the CNA, is battling.

In October 2015, the CNF/CNA and U Thein Sein’s quasi-civilian administration signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). The CNF/CNA, on the other hand, has joined hands with the shadow National Unity Government (NUG) in the people’s movement against the regime since the inception of the NUG.
