Myanmar Hit by Five Earthquakes, Strongest at 7.7 Magnitude, Tremors Felt Across Northeast India and Southeast Asia
International: Myanmar experienced a series of five earthquakes on Friday, with the most powerful measuring 7.7 magnitude, causing widespread panic and sending tremors across Northeast India, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
The first quake, recorded at 7.7 magnitude, struck at 11:50 AM IST, with its epicenter located at 21.93°N, 96.07°E at a depth of 10 km. This was followed by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake at 12:02 PM IST, further escalating fears of structural damage and aftershocks.
Three additional tremors of 5.0, 4.4, and 4.3 magnitudes were recorded at 12:57 PM, 2:48 PM, and 3:25 PM IST, respectively, with all occurring at a depth of 10 km. The earthquakes were centered around Myanmar’s central and northern regions, prompting concerns about infrastructure stability.
The repeated seismic activity led to mass evacuations, with videos circulating online showing residents fleeing buildings in major cities like Mandalay and Yangon. The tremors were also felt in Assam and Meghalaya in India, and as far as Bangkok, where authorities began emergency assessments to evaluate potential damage.
Myanmar’s authorities are currently assessing the impact, while regional governments remain on high alert for further aftershocks. Though no official casualties have been confirmed, disaster response teams are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential rescue operations.
