N. Biren Singh to continue as Manipur CM
Guwahati: N Biren Singh will continue as the Chief Minister of Manipur for the second straight term.
Singh was unanimously elected as the state’s chief minister at the Manipur BJP legislature party gathering in Imphal on Sunday.
The judgement comes ten days after the BJP won 32 seats in Manipur’s 60-member House in the state’s recent assembly elections for the second time in a row. The assembly seat of Heingang had been won by N Biren Singh.
There has been a lot of conjecture about who would be nominated as the state’s next chief minister. While N Biren Singh was a front-runner for the job, Th Bishwajit Singh, a two-time MLA and former cabinet minister, was also rumoured to be in the running.
It needs to be mentioned that N Biren Singh and Th Bishwajit Singh were both in Delhi on Saturday for meetings with the BJP’s top leadership.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman welcomed N Biren Singh’s second term as Manipur’s chief minister said, “It’s a fantastic choice that everyone agreed on. It will ensure that Manipur has a stable and responsible government that will continue to develop, as the Centre today, led by Prime Minister Modi, places a special emphasis on Northeastern states.”
Sitharaman, along with Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju, was in Imphal on Sunday to attend a meeting with the newly elected BJP MLAs in the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet congratulates N Biren Singh for getting unanimously elected as the Chief Minister of Manipur, once again.

It needs to be noted that the BJP contested alone in the Manipur Assembly elections this time and won a majority on the promise that a vote for the party would bring peace to the insurgency-plagued state.
