Naga Council Vows to Escalate Stir Against FMR Abrogation and Border Fencing

IMPHAL – With its 20-day ultimatum to the governments of India and Manipur having lapsed without a response, the United Naga Council (UNC) has declared its intention to escalate its agitation over the unilateral abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of border fencing along what it considers its ancestral homeland.

In a strong-worded statement released following a crucial Presidential Council Meeting held on Tuesday, the apex Naga body accused both the Central and State governments of displaying an “indifferent” attitude. This, despite a sustained period of democratic protests, including public rallies, demonstrations, and submission of numerous memoranda.

The UNC has put all its constituent, subordinate, and associate units, along with allied bodies such as the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and the Naga Women’s Union (NWU), on notice. It has called upon them to mobilise resources and prepare for a coordinated, collective action, with the mode of agitation and its operational plan to be announced within the next fortnight.

Reiterating its position, the council stressed its unwavering commitment to protecting Naga rights, culture, and traditional cross-border ties. The UNC has vowed to remain steadfast in its resolve, stating it will continue its struggle until its demands are met. The FMR, which allowed cross-border movement between India and Myanmar, and the planned fencing are seen by Naga groups as an attack on their historical and cultural linkages across the international border.
