Naga Hoho Calls on Central Government for Permanent Solution to Naga Political Issue

Northeast Desk, 2nd August: The Naga Hoho, the apex body representing Nagas across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and parts of Myanmar, has urged the Central government to take an “honest, determined, and concerted” approach to resolve the longstanding Naga political issue.

During its first Federal Assembly for the 2024-28 tenure held in Dimapur, the Naga Hoho released a statement emphasizing the need for a permanent, inclusive, and sustainable solution to the Naga issue. The statement highlighted that peace talks have been ongoing between the Nagas and the Government of India for the past 27 years, beginning with the signing of the first ceasefire agreement on July 25, 1997.

The Government of India has entered into various agreements with Naga groups over the years, including the Framework Agreement on August 3, 2015, and the Agreed Position on November 17, 2017. However, the Naga Hoho alleged that these accords have remained inconclusive due to a lack of integrity and political will from the Central government.

“The Government of India should make an honest, determined, and concerted effort to bring about a permanent solution to the Naga issue that is acceptable, inclusive, and sustainable to all stakeholders,” the Naga Hoho stated.

The body also criticized the Central and state governments’ “irresponsible, complacent, and short-sighted policies” for contributing to ethnic conflicts in the region, such as the recent Kuki-Meitei conflict in Manipur. They asserted that the absence of open conflict does not equate to permanent peace and reiterated their call for a genuine resolution to the Naga issue.

The Naga Hoho’s appeal underscores the urgency for a conclusive and lasting resolution to a decades-long struggle that has impacted the region’s stability and development.
