Nagaland: 8th Edition of Capt N Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament Kicks Off in Kohima

Kohima: Kohima witnessed a spectacular opening ceremony on November 2, 2024, as the highly anticipated 8th Edition of the Capt N Kenguruse, Maha Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament officially commenced at Indira Gandhi Stadium. The tournament, themed ‘Bigger Better Bolder,’ features 16 teams competing for glory.

Organized by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles as part of ‘Operation Sadbhavana,’ the tournament pays tribute to Captain N Kenguruse, who displayed extraordinary courage during the Kargil War. This initiative aims to create a significant platform for football teams in Nagaland while promoting sportsmanship, camaraderie, and unity among the youth in the region.

The opening ceremony was graced by Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, AVSM, YSM, GOC Spear Corps, alongside officials from Assam Rifles and the Nagaland Football Association. The event drew a large crowd of sports enthusiasts, with dignitaries emphasizing the tournament’s role in fostering discipline and teamwork among participants and supporters alike. Lieutenant General Pendharkar expressed pride in Captain Kenguruse’s legacy, highlighting its inspirational impact on youth and community cohesion.

As part of the tournament, teams will vie for a total prize pool, including Rs 3 lakh for the winners and Rs 1.5 lakh for the runners-up, along with additional cash awards for the third and fourth-place teams.

The ceremony featured lively performances from Nagaland’s renowned Tetseo Sisters, along with Mr. Imna Yaden, who composed the tournament’s theme song. The Fifth Note band and Ms. Kenie Ritse, Miss Northeast 2023, also graced the occasion as partners of the tournament.

The excitement continues as the finals are set for November 12, 2024, with the inaugural match featuring Mez & Co FC Kohima against Young Generation FC Wokha marking a vibrant start to the ten days of thrilling football action ahead.
