Nagaland Assembly Greenlights Landmark Rs 24,699.83 Crore Budget for 2025-26

Kohima: The Nagaland Legislative Assembly has officially approved the state’s budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, a substantial financial plan totaling Rs 24,699.83 crore. This significant allocation was passed by voice vote, marking a crucial step in the state’s economic trajectory.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who also oversees the finance department, presented the budget to the assembly. Following detailed deliberations, the members of the legislative assembly granted approval to the demand for grants across 82 departments, paving the way for the budget’s implementation.

The assembly further ratified the Nagaland Appropriation (No. 3) Bill 2025, which formalizes the disbursement and allocation of the Rs 24,699.83 crore from the state’s consolidated fund, ensuring the financial framework for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.

This budget introduces a series of new initiatives designed to bolster Nagaland’s development. Notable among these is the Skill Mission, aimed at providing vocational training to 5,000 young individuals, focusing on both self-employment and private-sector opportunities, with a particular emphasis on emerging industries. The Living Morung Initiative seeks to revitalize and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Naga people. In response to the state’s energy needs, the Solar Power Mission has been launched. A Drone Training Centre will also be established, providing job-oriented training in drone technology for the youth.

Further initiatives include expanding banking access to previously unbanked blocks by developing necessary infrastructure to support bank branches, and the Chief Minister’s Fellowship Programme, designed to nurture future leaders for the state. A fleet of 40 buses will be introduced to enhance transportation services, and efforts will be intensified to fast-track development in interstate border areas.

On the final day of the assembly session, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer expressed his personal assessment of the budget, describing it as exceptionally holistic and indicative of a resurgent and transformed Nagaland poised to overcome its challenges. He commended Chief Minister Rio, his council of ministers, and the MLAs for their vision and dedication in crafting a ‘far-sighted budget’, emphasizing their commitment to the people of Nagaland.

Following the budget’s passage, Speaker Longkumer announced the formation of various financial and non-financial committees of the Assembly, along with the panel of chairpersons for the 2025-2026 period. He then adjourned the House sine die, concluding the session.
